Intensive Care Unit



The Intensive Care Unit of Children’s Hospital, Chongqing Medical University, was co-founded in 1982 with Child & Maternal Bureau of Ministry of Health and United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund. Initiated by Professor Xiqiang Yang, Professor Zhongyi Lu and Professor Fengwu Kuang, PICU has become one of the Key Clinical Disciplines Subspecialties granted by Ministry of Health as well as one of the training bases of American Heart Association (AHA) recently. Since then we have undertaken the pre-hospital children rescue service of Chongqing City, including major catastrophic events. Now PICU has 31 beds with approximately 2000 inpatients annually. We also offer the education programs of Pediatrics in Ph.D. and master degree for Emergency Medicine and Nursing. In addition, the unit is designated by State Ministry of Health as one of the training centers to provide professional training for ICU nurses and other medical staff members. Many of PICU faculty members actively are involved in Chinese Medical Association and hold leadership positions; such as Deputy Head of Pediatrics Group in Chinese Emergency Medicine Societies. PICU was also awarded as Vice Chairman of Pediatrics in Intensive Medicine Societies of Chinese Medical Doctor Association. In recent years, 20 research projects have been granted by National Natural Science Foundation, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Personnel, International Co-operation Foundation and Chongqing Ministry of Science and Technology. PICU has also established reputation internationally. It shares long-term and multi-direction partnership with many other important medical centers at home and aboard, including BC Children’s Hospital(Canada), Cincinnati Children’s(United States), Prince of Wales Hospital affiliated to the Chinese University of Hong Kong and KK Women's and Children's Hospital of Singapore. Awards on research projects on the subject of Science and Technology Progress includes: Second Prize by Chongqing Municipal Government, Third Prize by Chinese Medical Association and First Prize by Chongqing Municipal Health and Family Planning Commission. In addition, PICU is consistently honored as Youth Civilization Unit and Woman Civilization Station by State Ministry of Health, Star Nursing and other titles.
